So I haven’t written in a while because I have been super busy and my internet has been super sketchy. So much has happened since my last post. My parents came to visit me in Florence and I had fun playing tour guide for a little while, showing them all of the sites that I had already seen. We celebrated my birthday and I got to eat lots of really good food all on my parent’s tab. After Florence we traveled to Venice together to see the city and stay for a little while. Venice was everything I imagined and more. Pictures really can’t do the city justice. It was so cool to ride around the city on the vaporettos (water taxis) and to get lost in the tangled alleyways of Venice. The city itself is actually really quirky and artsy, but it still has incredible sights to see.
Over my fall break I visited friends in London for an entire week. It was so nice to see people from Tufts and to be able to speak English and have myself understood. London is an incredible city with so much to see and do. It is very different from Florence mainly because of its size. Whereas in Florence you can pretty much walk to wherever you want to go, in London you have to take the Tube (They really do say “Mind the Gap”….a lot.)
I did all of the basic touristy things. I saw the Tower of London and the crown jewels, went up on the London Eye (the huge ferris wheel), and shopped at Harrod’s. I saw incredible art at the Tate Modern, and incredible theater in the West End (Billy Elliot, Avenue Q, and War Horse). We went to the Absolut Ice Bar which is a bar made entirely of ice so you have to wear ridiculous hooded furry capes. I was also in London for Halloween (I dressed as Big Ben: painted clock-face and all). It was really nice to spend a lengthy amount of time in one city and I felt like I got to know the city at least a little bit. I can definitely see myself living in London at some point in my life.
A couple of weekends ago me and some friends from my program traveled to Budapest. This was someplace that I had never imagined traveling to but I am so glad that I did. It is an incredibly interesting city with so much history. The communist regime in Hungary lasted until 1990, and it was fascinating to see how far the city had come since the fall of the Iron Curtain. We walked around the Castle Hill district (a hill with lots of shops and…castles), went to the Terror Museum which was a museum devoted to the history of the Nazi and Communist regimes, and went to the famous Budapest-ian spas. Budapest has sprawling outdoor and indoor spa complexes complete with healing waters, saunas, hot tubs, massages etc. It was such a relaxing day, despite having to look at hundreds of elderly Hungarians in their bathing suits.
This weekend it’s Paris where I’m going to see Kanye West in concert (!!!). I’m sureĀ I will have plenty to say about that when I get back.
